World War III?

too often i hear the Iraq War is just like Vietnam. dude, we gotta get out now.

too often i want to puke.

is Iraq really like Vietnam?
has anyone actually tried to compare the facts?

now i don't claim to be a history or political buff, and it's very likely that i'm searching for a bias opinion out of thin air...but i think people need to think about stuff before they start spreading false ideas.

Vietnam went like this.
the North hated the South.
the South hated the North.
it was none of our business.
nobody bothered us.
it was purely foreign territory as far as American civilians were concerned.
yet we got involved.....because....unforunately.....
.....we tend to pity the underdog.

so we helped the South fight.
we lost a ton of soldiers.
for a war that no one cared about.
Civilian deaths = 4 million

Alright. So. That war pretty much stunk. So after a protest occured in every major American city, the President decided to pull out.

Perfect timing really.
Not only did we lose great soldiers, we lost the war to the North.
It was a lose-lose situation.

So....in all of this....apparently people see a mirror image in Iraq.
- Too many deaths
- No success/WMDs
- Wasted money

these similarities (though they sound reasonable) are invalid.
While Vietnam lost 4 million civilians, Iraq's
Civilian deaths total 60,000.

hmm....i'm afraid these figures don't even compare.

While over 58,000 U.S. soldiers lost their lives in Vietnam.
Iraq has taken just over 4,000 U.S. soldiers.

though i realize every casuality is mourned, when you make a comparison it is essential that you get your facts straight.

following political patterns instead, i feel it is more accurate to equate Iraq with the Second World War.
so here it goes:

Iraq is not like Vietnam.....Iraq is like WWII.

Iraq fell under the leadership of Hussain.....he killed women and children, murders traitors and rebels of Al Qaeda....he used force to recruit young boys into his military....his dictatorship was seemingly ignored by the rest of the world.....

Germany fell under the leadership of Hilter....he discrimminated against Jews, blacks and other unwanted minorities of the Nazi regime....he used propaganda to recruit all the young men of his country to join the cause....his dictatorship was seemingly ignored by the rest of the world......

that is....
....until they set the world on fire.

Nazis murdered 2,400 Americans in 1941.

Al Quida murdered 3,000 Americans in 2001.

U.S. waged war against the Nazis.

U.S. waged war against terror.

these wars both started with the purpose of waging war against an idealogy.
but who are these people?

who were the Nazis?
who are the terrorists?

War on Nazis turns into taking out Japan in Hiroshima.
War on terror turns into taking out Hussain in Iraq.

Perhaps too much effort was placed on the destruction of the Iraqi regime.
Perhaps it seems unnecessary and a waste of money.

But the point is: there is less Al Qaeda running around the world, just as there were less Nazis running around after Hiroshima.

When the U.S. got involved in WWII, they were not just waging war against Japan.
The Axis powers included Japan, Gerrmany and Italy. The U.S. engaged to take out those who had harmed us.

When the U.S. declarded war on terrorism this included all terrorist countries that housed Al Qaeda members.

When we are attacked, we fight back.

If citizens of the U.S. actually knew their history and remembered the committment it took to take out Nazi regime, they wouldn't be so surprised or frustrated with the policies surrounding our current war.

If a comparison to Vietnam can be made simply with death toll facts (that barely resemble each other), than I can surely make a comparison to WWII based on political motivation.

Feel free to make a case of your own.
The media ain't always right.

some days i don't like our school paper.
okay. not true.

some days i don't like what the paper prints.
eh....well....

unfortunately, there are days when the paper prints quotes from stupid people.

correction: it's not the paper's fault.

for starters, there was a letter to the editor.
commenting on the in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, Ms Craft appeals to our emotional side by emphasizing the economic stress of these immigrants.

she is quoted:
"So-called illegal aliens are economic refugees. They come here to escape extreme poverty. Let's stop demonizing desperate people in desperate situations."

Okay, sure. America is often blamed for being full of themselves and dominating the world economically. However, it is absolutely impossible to save
EVERY impoverished person
from EVERY country
DESPITE criminal behavior (i.e. entering the country illegally).

I just wish she understand the impossibility in carrying out her high ideals.

Anonymous kvetch puts a more realistic spin on the whole situation (in my opinion):
"Notice to all out-of-state students: Claim to be an 'undocumented' immigrant and save thousands on tuition!"

Turning to the front page, we have an article on STD testing. A highly entertaining article Actually.

So it seems there has been a new discovery according to Fred Wyand of the American Social Health Association. There is no longer a mysterious origin for the onset of STDs, in fact

"STDs are increasingly becoming a fact of being sexually active."

Who would've guessed?!
I mean, it's not like other illnesses, where the cause is due to poor hygeine, aweful cafeteria food or inherited genes.

No!

There is actually a Specific Way to stop the contraction of STDs: DON'T HAVE SEX.

Oh My Gosh. Someone should name a building after this guy: Wyand Hall! Awesome.

Well, unfortunately, the article was not solely focused on the novel idea that STDs come from sex, but instead about the controversial topic of increasing student fees to incompass free STD testing.

Now, I don't know about you, but, seeing how I know the way to avoid contracting this disease...
...AND the theory is now well-known since a manager for the ASHA has stated it in a widely-read campus paper......
.....I'm thinking that I probably would not like to pay more money to a university for a service I never intend to use....
....AND which is not that expensive in the first place.

$35-55 for a test is Not a big deal (at least compared to your overall tuition).
Plus, you should have a general idea of whether or not you might need to be tested.
(I mean, most people are fairly aware of how much sex they've had.)

It's not like I'm against student health fees as a universal idea.

I understand that most illnesses for which students call Student Health are for reasons totally out of their control: migranes
pneumonia
strep throat
fractures, etc.

Most of these reasons are unpredictable and can be difficult to avoid (especially when 30 people share a bathroom).

However, it does not make sense to make students (especially those who know how to avoid STDs) to be forced to pay for other irresponsible adults.

I don't know about the rest of the UNC student body,
but I certainly don't want to pay for someone else's poor decision to have a careless sex life.

Living in the Real World

Why do people want us teens to experience the world?
Everywhere I go I hear Real World this and Real World that.

What's the rush?

Exactly what IS this Real World that we're missing out on?
Sex?
Drugs?
Alcohol?

If college is the Real World, than I think I've hit the nail on the head.

So why are we encouraged to learn about this Real World at younger and younger ages?

Sex - if they promote sex/sex education at younger and younger ages and also fight for abortion, then it can't be about procreation.

Drugs - with this information all we do is argue about whether or not it should be legal and then blame the government for not keeping drugs from crossing the border.

Alcohol - i might experience the taste, but then i'm lectured by these same people to be sure not to drink and drive.

Sex promotes more psychological and emotional issues among teens which lead to more psychology majors getting clinical jobs.

Drugs promote political disagreements and create a black market and illegal dealings across borders.

Alcohol causes more deaths, addictions and car wrecks among teens and communities.

This is the Real World we are now required to become acquainted with.
But honestly....what is their motive?
.
.
.
.
depression?
.
.
addictions?
.
.
death?
.
.
situational pleasure?
.
.
what good is coming out of this Real World?

please....take me back to make-believe...
